A game of Goblins, mushrooms and social climbing.

PLAYTIME - Approx. 2 Hrs

NOTE: Browser version works fine, but sometimes assets have a delay to load. The game runs more smoothly if downloaded (Windows & Linux options available). Also, your game saves can get lost in the browser version if you have an aggressive cookie cleanup regime.

Clicking the 'download' button also reveals the option to toss a dollar or two to the creators, if you're so kindly inclined ^_^

The Setting

Based on the RPG module 'The Goblin Manor of Anstruther-Mogg'

Take on the role of 'Min': an adventurous, refined and charming mycologist. She's a goblin with a chip on her shoulder and an axe to grind, though not in a crude 'bury an axe in someone's skull' kind of way.

She lives among her goblin sisters in a loose coalition that barely holds together on a good day, as each goblin jostles for position atop the hierarchy of the house. Help Min to finally gain advantage over her sisters by embarking on an epic (and non-linear!) quest through mountain, forest, farm, castle, university and crypt. Gather exotic mushroom species and use Min's knowledge of all things fungal to use these mushrooms in pursuit of your goals.

The Game

This little game is made by two lead designers, each of whom has a soft spot for the golden games of years past. One has a love of classic jRPGS (especially Chrono Trigger), the other is a fan of the Lucas Arts classics, especially the Monkey island series. The resulting mix is an exploration and adventure game with the graphical charm of a 16 bit RPG, light turn-based combat, and plenty of little asides, in-jokes and interactions that pepper the ingame world.

There are many tasks to complete during the game, and these can be done in any order the player chooses - though sometimes you may need a skill acquired on one quest to unlock progress in another. Hunt down those mushrooms!

The Goblins

This game started life as a personal project to create a birthday present for someone who, like us, adores goblins and thinks they get a raw deal in the mainstream media.

He is the illustrator for the tabletop RPG module The Goblin Manor of Anstruther-Mogg, a compendium of 59 larger-than-life goblin sisters who add much needed character and depth to any Goblin anthropologists out there.

Our game takes four of our favourite Goblin sisters from this Zine as antagonists, with the kind permission of their creators. They were immensely fun to write, and we hope you'll enjoy meeting them. They're quite, quite horrible.

The Mushrooms

Mushrooms are complex lifeforms, and if the plot gets a bit thick and convoluted, then that is the cost of having the most botanically well-realised mushrooms that have ever starred in a video game to date.

I really liked this game, but I have one, glaring problem. I can't load any of my saves.

I don't want to spoil too much, but theres a random effect generator some point in the game, and I got an effect that said I felt a "deep sense of foreboding"  but not much else. I don't know, however, if this changed the ending, because Im unable to access the save file before it, and I don't want to play through the entire game again.
Other then that, this is a very charming and humorous game, even if little Min isn't quite as smart as she thinks she is.

One of the devs here =). Glad you enjoyed the game, despite this very annoying problem, which we will definitely look into! Did you play a downloaded version or the web version?

Also yes indeed, she might not be quite as smart as she thinks she is ;).

Min is definitely not as smart as she thinks - but then, neither am I, it seems. The problem is identified and should be fixed now, thanks to the sharpness of esdoubleuk. It was a recently added autosave feature not playing nice with everything else in the browser version.

I'm very sorry that you lost your progress, it sounds like you got your teeth into the game nicely. Thank you for your kind words, despite the frustration.

Do I understand correctly that you did finish the game, but are not sure if there were different endings possible? I can confirm that there's just the one ending - there's only one way Min's story could end up XD

Yes, I did finish the game, and quite enjoyed it-although I did restart a few times when I realized I missed something. The annoying thing was that I wanted to check if anything changed if I hadn't gotten the "sense of foreboding" effect, since it seemed to foreshadow the ending. The annoying bit is that I couldn't go back and retry since I was unable to access any of the save files. I'm glad you were able to fix it up.

So lovely to see this live and kicking! Fabulous wee game :)

Great game.  I particularly enjoyed the fun storytelling and I felt the game had some subtle but clever concepts.  It also made me rethink how I see goblins!

There's a bit of reading at the start but as soon as I got the "aha moment" about the mushrooms I was hooked.   It doesn't rely on lots of repetitive battles or item gathering and I was kept interested in progressing the objectives.

Despite the (often fun) insults from the sisters it's actually a really homely experience!  I would recommend this game to anyone regardless of what they usually play as there is something for everyone.  Some battles, some problem solving, some character interaction and lots of references to both literature and science!

Kudos to the developers!  Time well spent!

Good Morning, Dear Sister Gameplay
